KOMPAS.com — Para ilmuwan telah menemukan cara untuk menjinakkan sebuah protein yang memainkan peran kunci dalam kanker leukimia dan sejumlah kanker lainnya. Temuan itu memberikan harapan besar akan tersedianya jenis terapi baru guna mengatasi kanker. Upaya-upaya sebelumnya telah gagal sehingga para ahli beranggapan kanker tidak dapat diobati.
Studi yang dilaksanakan US Dana-Farber Cancer Institute itu dipublikasikan di jurnal Nature. Protein merupakan salah satu faktor transkripsi tubuh yang berfungsi menghidupkan, mematikan, dan memobilisasi gen. Protein pula yang mengontrol sel bertumbuh dan berkembang. Kabar buruknya, ia juga membantu memberikan energi pada pertumbuhan tumor.
Adapun faktor transkripsi yang menjadi sasaran studi para ahli itu disebut notch. Gen yang bertanggung jawab memproduksi protein itu kadang rusak dan bermutasi pada pasien dengan kanker darah atau dikenal juga dengan kondisi T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Akibatnya, gen rusak tersebut selalu bekerja setiap waktu dan mendorong pertumbuhan sel tidak terkontrol yang merupakan karakteristik dari kanker.
Keabnormalan notch yang sama mendasari pula jenis kanker lain, seperti paru, ovarian, pankreas, dan lambung. Setelah meneliti struktur notch secara mendetail, mereka mengisolasi sebuah titik lemah potensial di struktur itu. Mereka kemudian menggunakan pengikat kimia untuk mencetak potongan protein yang disebut peptide dalam bentuk tiga dimensi.
Hasil cetakan ini yang kemudian dilepaskan dan diserap sel untuk menempati tempat spesifik yang dituju. Dalam beberapa percobaan, para peneliti mendapati peptide tadi dapat mengganggu dan menjinakkan kegiatan notch rusak. Percobaan ini memberikan harapan besar untuk pengobatan kanker, ujar Prof Greg Verdine dari Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Teknik serupa diharapkan dapat digunakan pula untuk terapi jenis kanker lainnya. Namun, penelitian awal tersebut masih harus dikembangkan dan diuji lebih lanjut efek samping penggunaan bagi manusia.

setiap kali komsel ke bawah adalah saat-saat yang menyenangkan. itu mengingatkan saya atas kasih karunia TUHAN yang sangat besar buat saya. singkatnya, TUHAN selalu menjawab doa, bahkan dia memberikan lebih daripada yang saya minta.

- Menanyakan kepada adik-adik saya kapan bisa komsel (biasanya sih hari sabtu).
- Mengingatkan mereka di hari senin atau selasa atau rabu bahwa hari sabtu di minggu itu akan ada komsel.
- Memastikan jadwal dan tempat fix untuk komsel hari sabtu dengan meng-sms mereka di hari jumat.
- Jumat malam : menyiapkan bahan komsel.
- Sabtu pagi : berangkat komsel, sebelum naik angkot beli konsumsi dulu di Yomart deket rumah, hehe.
nah, hal pertama yang kami lakukan saat komsel adalah MAKAN!! 
kami makan konsumsi yang saya bawa. peraturan yang saya buat adalah semua makanan harus habis, baru komsel dimulai. sambil makan, kami saling bercerita mengenai apa saja yang sudah terjadi dalam hidup kami di waktu-waktu terakhir. salam perkuliahan, pelayanan, hubungan pertemanan, keluarga, dll. klo udah cerita-cerita gini seru banget deh, hehe..
hmm.. ini adalah snack favorit saat komsel yang biasanya saya beli di minimarket deket rumah

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.Com – Harapan baru terbit dalam terapi pengobatan penyakit yang jadi momok banyak orang. Setelah operasi, kemoterapi, dan radiasi, dunia kedokteran akhirnya menemukan cara lain untuk mengatasi kanker, yakni menggunakan pelawan alami tubuh, sistem imun.
Pendekatan keempat itu oleh para ahli disebut sebagai vaksin kanker kendati sifatnya adalah pengobatan, bukan pencegahan. Namun, ini adalah sebuah langkah baru dalam pengobatan penyakit mematikan itu setelah kurun waktu 30 tahun penelitian.
Pada konferensi mengenai kanker, kemarin (31/5), salah seorang peneliti mengatakan, vaksin ini akan menjaga sel kanker mengganas dalam jangka waktu setahun. Dalam pengobatan kanker hal tersebut adalah sebuah langkah besar, mengingat keberhasilan sebuah terapi biasanya diukur dalam hitungan minggu atau bahkan hari.
Dalam sebuah percobaan terhadap tiga penyakit, kanker prostat, penyakit kulit melanoma, dan tumor neuroblastoma yang sering menyerang anak-anak, vaksin ini menunjukkan hasil yang positif dalam beberapa minggu.
“Kami belum tahu apakah yang kami lakukan akan membuat perbedaan besar,” kata Dr Len Lichtenfield dari American Cancer Society.
Berbeda dengan penyakit yang disebabkan oleh virus, seperti flu atau polio, di mana mudah dikenali oleh sistem imun karena mereka punya bentuk berbeda dari sel manusia, masalah terbesar dalam pengobatan kanker adalah sistem imun kita sering tak “melihat” kanker sebagai lawan.
“Sel kanker berasal dari sel kita sendiri sehingga sistem imun kita sering tak bisa membedakannya dengan sel yang normal,” papar Dr.Patrick Hwu dari M.D Anderson Cancer Center, Universitas Texas, AS.
Pada terapi vaksin kanker ini para ahli mengambil zat inti dari permukaan sel kanker lalu menggantinya dengan sesuatu yang sudah dikenali sebagai benda asing oleh sistem imun. Pada kasus limfoma atau kanker getah bening, para ahli memakai protein kerang. “Ini seperti melatih sistem imun untuk membunuh sel jahat,” kata Hwu.
Agar serangan semakin kuat, para dokter menambah sesuatu yang oleh sel imun dianggap sangat berbahaya dan perlu dilawan segera.
